Ink mist build-up is often caused by nozzle clogging, excess pressure, or incorrect print distance. Here’s how to fix it and avoid contamination.
What is ink mist or overspray?
You may notice a fine layer of ink around the printhead or on surrounding machinery. This “mist” results from ink droplets not forming or landing correctly—usually due to fluid or hardware issues.
Causes of overspray and misting
Cause | Fix |
---|---|
Clogged or damaged nozzle | Clean or replace nozzle and restrictor |
Printhead too far from substrate | Adjust printhead height to spec (2–15 mm) |
Excess ink pressure | Run diagnostics and recalibrate system pressure |
High humidity or air currents | Use environmental shielding or baffles |
Steps to resolve ink mist
-
Power off printer and clean head exterior
-
Inspect nozzle and restrictor for dried ink
-
Check Print Parameters > Drop Pressure for overpressure
-
Adjust print height and alignment
-
Ensure airflow near the line doesn’t interfere with the stream
Preventative tips
-
Clean nozzle daily during high-volume production
-
Replace filters on time to maintain stable pressure
-
Avoid running with cracked enclosures or fan covers missing
