What’s the difference between Gate, Trigger, and Ignore modes in CIJ printers?

Understand how photocell trigger modes work on the CM750, when to use each one, and how to avoid double-printing or misaligned codes.

Trigger modes control when the printer prints

Your CIJ printer uses a photocell sensor to detect products as they pass the printhead. But how the printer reacts depends on the trigger mode selected.

Set the wrong one, and you’ll either double-print, miss marks, or waste ink.

Trigger Mode Overview

Mode Description When to Use It
Trigger Printer fires once per product detected Most standard applications
Gate Printer fires only while product is in front of sensor Ideal for variable-length products
Ignore Triggers Printer runs continuously without sensor input Use only for continuous web or testing

How to change trigger mode on the CM750

  1. Go to Print Parameters > Trigger Mode

  2. Select from the list: Trigger / Gate / Ignore

  3. Adjust Blocking Time if needed (prevents re-triggering too soon)

Troubleshooting trigger issues

  • Double printing? ➤ Increase blocking time

  • Missed prints? ➤ Clean or realign the photocell

  • Nothing prints at all? ➤ Check sensor wiring or mode setting

Pro tips

  • Gate mode is best for irregular objects or jittery conveyors

  • Ignore mode should only be used in controlled environments

  • Always test print alignment after any mode change
