What happens if I mix two CIJ ink types?

Mixing different CIJ inks—like MEK and ethanol—can clog your printer and cause permanent damage. Here’s what to avoid and how to recover.

Why you should never mix inks

Different ink chemistries contain incompatible solvents, dyes, and resins. Mixing can lead to:

  • Gelling or thickening in the tank or head

  • Filter blockages

  • Nozzle obstruction

  • Sensor failures

  • Complete system contamination

If it’s already been mixed: act fast

  1. Power down the printer

  2. Run the Clean Ink System immediately

  3. Flush with the solvent of your target ink

  4. Replace filters and restrictor

  5. Monitor for residual instability

Safe switching procedure

  • Always check your fluid compatibility chart

  • Fully flush system when changing ink types

  • Don’t assume same-brand inks are interchangeable
