Why is my ink turning thick or gelatinous?

Thick, sticky, or jelly-like CIJ ink is a red flag. Learn what causes it and how to fix it.

What causes thickened ink?

  • Evaporation: fluid stored unsealed or in heat

  • Cross-contamination: incompatible fluids mixed

  • Expired ink: resin separation and breakdown

  • Improper storage: high humidity or temperature swings

  • Moisture ingress: water absorption through vented tanks

Symptoms to look for

  • Ink won’t flow or start

  • Bubbles or clumps in return line

  • Frequent nozzle blockage

  • Viscosity alarms from VMS

  • Gummy residue on restrictor or filters

Fix it quickly
