What causes ink to foam in the return line?

Foaming ink creates instability and can signal serious fluid system issues. Here’s what to check.

What’s normal?

A stable CIJ system returns fluid to the tank in a smooth, continuous flow. Foam, frothing, or air bubbles are warning signs.

Common causes of foaming

Cause Fix
Air leak in return line Tighten or replace tubing/fittings
Incorrect solvent mix Flush system and refill with approved fluids
Over-agitation Reduce pressure if above spec
Ink degradation (expired or contaminated) Replace ink and run Clean Ink System
Incompatible cleaning agent used Flush and refill with correct solvent

How to fix it

  1. Inspect for cracked or loose tubing

  2. Check tank seals and tank vent

  3. Run Fill Mixer and observe return flow

  4. If foaming persists, replace fluid and filters
