What causes ink to leak from my CIJ printhead?

Ink leaks waste fluid, ruin print quality, and can short internal components. Learn what causes leaks and how to stop them fast.

Why CIJ leaks are serious

A leaking head isn’t just messy—it’s a major fault risk. Ink can short electrical components, contaminate sensors, and cause permanent head failure.

Symptoms of head leakage

  • Ink pooling around the nozzle or gutter

  • Ink dripping from umbilical or connectors

  • Fault codes: Gutter error, Charge fault, Pressure too high

Likely causes & fixes

Cause Fix
Nozzle clog or partial restriction Clean or replace nozzle filter
Failed seal or O-ring in printhead Disassemble and replace seals
Overpressure in ink system Check pressure sensor and VMS calibration
Damaged umbilical or fittings Inspect and replace connectors
Ink too hot or volatile Confirm fluid spec and storage temp

What to do immediately

  1. Power down the printer

  2. Disconnect head and clean all external surfaces

  3. Inspect nozzle, gutter, and return line for blockages

  4. Check for seal or housing damage

  5. Replace damaged parts and run system diagnostics

Prevent future leaks

  • Perform weekly nozzle cleans

  • Avoid overtightening fittings

  • Replace filters and restrictors on schedule

  • Use only verified Needham inks and solvents
