Bubbles in your ink return line can cause drop instability or system errors—here’s how to find and fix the cause.
What bubbling means
You should see a smooth return of ink to the tank—not air pockets or foaming. Bubbles suggest suction faults, restrictor issues, or improper pressure regulation.
What causes ink bubbles
Cause | Fix |
---|---|
Blocked restrictor or nozzle | Replace or clean restrictor and filter |
Loose tubing or connector | Reseat or tighten ink return fittings |
Pump drawing air due to cracked line | Inspect return hose for damage |
Ink system not fully primed | Run Fill Mixer or Clean Ink System |
Steps to remove bubbling
-
Inspect the return line while ink is flowing
-
Tighten all fittings and check for cracks or leaks
-
Run Fill Mixer to purge air from the system
-
If bubbling persists, replace restrictor or pre-head filter
-
Monitor ink stream for charge faults or misfires
Prevent it in future
-
Never run the printer dry
-
Use Needham-approved tubing and connectors
-
Regularly inspect hoses and clamps for ageing or chemical wear
