Role Overview
The role will involve formulating specialised inks; developing and testing them from laboratory scale through to manufacturing. Working as part of a close-knit team, the individual will be responsible for improving existing ink formulations and for developing innovative new ink products. This will involve a combination of wet bench work, measurement of physical properties, and print-testing in inkjet printers.The ideal candidate will have a degree in chemistry, or a related subject, combined with hands-on experience of working in a laboratory environment. Although not essential, experience of formulating and testing digital inkjet inks, or similar coatings, would be an advantage. Good communication skills are also required as the role will require the successful candidate to liaise directly with both customers and raw material suppliers.This role requires a self-motivated individual, who will take responsibility for driving projects forward, with the support of the management team. Although primarily a technical position, there will be opportunities for the right candidate to contribute to other areas of the business. Needham Inks Ltd. is based in Whitchurch, Shropshire and the successful candidate will be expected to operate from our Head Office at this location.
Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake research and development of novel inks and coatings.
  • Formulate, characterise and test inks in the laboratory, and when necessary at customer premises.
  • Plan development projects, develop research methods, and implement agreed project plans.
  • Design and carry out experiments in accordance with project requirements.
  • Carry out lab-based development work from initial formulation/sample preparation through to final testing of inks.
  • Liaise with customers and suppliers to ensure that project specifications and test methods meet the correct specifications.
  • Drive projects forward to meet the needs of the business and its customers.
  • Develop a network of technical contacts with raw material suppliers.
  • Supervise production staff carrying out QC tests and take responsibility for ensuring QC tests on finished inks are carried out correctly.
  • Assist with technical requests from customers and with any technical problems in the production department.
  • Accurately update records. Write progress reports for presentation to technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Operate inkjet printers, carry out basic maintenance when required.
  • Author MSDS and other technical documents.
  • Research business-related information.
  • Contribute to business planning.
  • Work safely in a potentially hazardous environment.
  • Keep work area clean, safe and tidy.
  • Other duties as required.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Degree in chemistry, materials science, polymer science or related field. Alternatively a candidate with
    a number of years’ experience working as an ink chemist would be considered.
  • Self-motivated as the role will involve working unsupervised, and taking responsibility for driving projects forward, with the support of the management team.
  • Experience of working within an industrial R&D environment.
  • Experience of formulating inks or similar coatings would be an advantage.
  • Good analytical skills, an ability to interpret results, and make recommendations based on experimental results.
  • Ability to organise own workload and work on multiple projects at the same time.
  • Hands-on experience of working safely and efficiently in a laboratory environment.
  • Good report writing and project-planning skills.
  • Proven capabilities in designing and planning experiments, problem solving and developing innovative and creative solutions to technical challenges.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; the ability to communicate complex ideas in a straightforward manner and to interact effectively with colleagues at all levels.
  • Good colour vision.
  • Ability to work unsupervised.
  • Knowledge of the properties of hazardous chemicals.

The role entails working as part of our production team, manufacturing inks and related products. We are looking for an individual who is flexible and willing to take on different tasks when required; has a can-do attitude and good attention to detail. Experience of working in a production environment would be an advantage, however, full training will be given. Needham Inks Ltd. is based in Whitchurch, Shropshire. Key Responsibilities
  • Fill ink into bottles from bulk storage containers.
  • Operate cartridge filling machines.
  • Accurately update production records on specified forms.
  • Manufacture other products when required.
  • Inspect goods received and ensure they are of correct quantity & type.
  • Assist with packing and dispatch when required.
  • Organise goods in the warehouse.
  • Transfer drums from solvent store to production areas using appropriate lifting equipment.
  • Operate, setup and clean liquid filling machines.
  • Monitor raw material stock levels.
  • Work safely in a potentially hazardous environment.
  • Carry out general maintenance in the factory.
  • Keep work area clean and tidy.
